President's Message 2024-2025
Posted 28 days ago
The recent survey conducted by AACN-PBC in 2023-2024, a replication of the 2001 study, shed light on the persistent challenges in the nursing profession despite advancements in technology and healthcare. Over the 22-year period, issues related to staffing, meal and break schedules, patient outcomes, and non-nursing responsibilities remained prevalent or were reported as worsening. These concerns, supported by current literature and evidence, were addressed at the annual PBC AACN summit in August. The summit provided an avenue for local nurses to engage in open discussions with peers from various hospitals, resulting in productive dialogues on the daily challenges and successes in nursing. Stress management emerged as a prominent
issue, underscoring the significance of addressing stress among nurses. Furthermore, the summit highlighted the significance of fostering a positive work environment and a sense of belongingness for first-line nurses, which was deemed more valuable than financial rewards. The discussions initiated at the summit are integral to AACN-PBC's ongoing commitment. Drawing inspiration from the biblical narrative of Ester in the book of Esther, my presidency is centered on the concept of seizing the opportune moment. Just as Ester's actions were pivotal for her nation, the nursing profession necessitates our active involvement in shaping its future. Our
silence on crucial matters allows others to make decisions, influence policies, and dictate practices, creating a void that is filled with out of touch mandates, regulations, and other external influence. It is imperative for us to find the courage to vocalize our perspectives, assume leadership roles, and drive positive change – expressing “Our Courage to Soar”. As nurses, we each possess the power to instigate and drive change and mold our own practice. The creation of a Healthy Work Environment (HWE) would provide a great starting point and is an obtainable goal and one that each of us can initiate and foster.
This year, AACN-PBC remains steadfast in continuing these vital conversations and being a catalyst for necessary change. AACN-PBC represents each one of us, and I look forward to your engagement and participation and to hearing your voice.
In your service,
Tammie S. Couch BSN, RN
President AACN - PBC, 2024-2025
